2024 Global "Farmer Voice" Unveil Three Major Challenges Faced by Chinese FarmersRecently, the results of the 2024 Global "Farmer Voice" survey (hereinafter referred to as the "survey") have been unveiled. The survey was conducted by global market research firm Kynetec on behalf of Bayer. Spanning eight countries, including China, Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Kenya, Ukraine, and the United States, the survey gathered insights from over 2,000 farmers. Participants were randomly chosen from each market to obtain a representative sample covering accurately the diversity of crop farmer profiles. The interviews were conducted between June and July 2024.Among the eight countries involved, the voices of approximately 300 Chinese farmers were also incorporated into the survey's results, significantly contributing to the insights on global agricultural development trends.Globally, 75 percent of farmers are already impacted by climate change or worried about its impacts, and 71 percent of them report reduced yields as a major concern. 6 out of 10 have already experienced significant revenue loss due to weather events out of the norm recently. As part of the solution, farmers count on innovation: 75 percent are open to implementing new technologies to better cope with climate change. Desire for better yields, resilient farms, and protected livelihoods are driving interest and adoption of more regenerative and technological approaches to farming.Chinese farmers surveyed identified "price/income volatility" (57%), "fertilizer costs" (57%), and "increased threat of crop damage from pests, disease or resistance issues" as the top three challenges. When asked about, "what factors would most benefit your farm in the future?", 65 percent of the Chinese farmers surveyed prioritized "access to better crop protection technology," a demand far exceeding that of farmers in other countries. Additionally, "access to seeds and traits designed to better cope with extreme weather" is also highly ranked among Chinese farmers (36%), calling for ongoing deep engagement from scientific research and industry ends to provide more support.Meanwhile, Chinese farmers have shown a preference for regenerative agricultural practices that are tied to soil health. 66 percent of Chinese farmers surveyed reported using crop rotation, 49 percent have used biofertilizers, and 47 percent have taken actions to maintain soil health. In terms of digital technology, 49 percent of Chinese farmers have already integrated digital technology into their farming practices, with another 27 percent planning to expand their use of digital technology in the coming future."When you look at the survey and talk with Chinese farmers, it is evident that innovation is a crucial factor. Farmers are very interested in why we talk about climate change in cities. Climate change is affecting farmers' livelihoods, and this impact is different from the frequent rainfall I experience at my home in St. Louis. Therefore, for Chinese farmers and farmers around the globe, innovation and technology are particularly critical. I’m very excited about the fact that China is now opening the market for biotechnology breeding. We hope to introduce our technology to China, see the approval process and deliver it to the farmers for their use. The farmers will be able to produce more, restore more - restore soil health, restore carbon emissions, or restore carbon in the soil. We are eager to bring innovation and new technologies, including biotechnology, to farmers in China." said Rodrigo Santos, Member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG and President of the Crop Science Division.Faced with long-term challenges such as global food security and climate change, how is Bayer Crop Science mapping out a strategy to partner with farmers, research institutions, and government departments both in China and on a worldwide scale, to collectively advance innovation and sustainability?Rodrigo Santos emphasized that collaboration is essential for bolstering farmers' adaptability and driving innovation. Bayer has forged extensive partnerships worldwide, including in Brazil, Russia, Africa, and India, which include introducing Direct Seeded Rice to Indian farmers. In the context of China's agricultural sector, smallholder farmers represent the vast majority of the farming community, thus it has made the development of smallholder farmers of great concern."In China, collaboration and partnership are central to driving innovation and benefiting smallholder farmers. Globally, large and medium-sized farmers have access to information and technology, while smallholders are facing challenges that not only access to the technology but also access to technical support. Finance is a very important element for smallholders to reach a high level of technology and returns. And we see examples of that. That’s why we have so many global collaborations to provide support to smallholder farmers, they can also be part of the solution for regenerative agriculture. This is only possible by collaboration, we cannot provide all of that by ourselves at Bayer." Rodrigo Santos highlighted.
